SPOTLIGHT
Some people stopped talking about it and started fixing it.
We go find the people already building this stuff, get their story told, and give them a bigger megaphone. Here's a few we've found so far.
Regenerative Land and Food Dr. Debal Deb
Vrihi
Ecologist who resigned his career in 1997 and settled in a remote West Bengal village to found Vrihi, India's first and largest non-governmental, open-source folk rice seed bank. Farmers can take seeds for free, on the condition they share some of their harvest back.
Regenerative Land and Food Melissa & Ben
Regenerative prawn farm, Malaysia
Siblings who studied biomedical engineering and biomedical sciences, then walked away from corporate careers to run a 200-acre regenerative prawn farm in Malaysia. Their story was first told by In Real Life, a Malaysian storytelling outlet covering real career-transition stories.
Regenerative Land and Food Mary Mattingly
Swale
Artist and 2023 Guggenheim Fellow who founded Swale in 2016, a mobile floating food forest built on a reclaimed barge. The entire premise: foraging and picking food in public space is illegal on land, so Swale puts it on water instead, where city food-foraging laws do not apply.
Ocean and Coastal Systems Bren Smith
GreenWave
Former commercial fisherman who founded GreenWave in 2013 after his own fishing grounds collapsed. Now trains a global network of ocean farmers to grow kelp and shellfish using a vertical, zero-input method that restores marine ecosystems while creating climate jobs.
